TAS Country : August 5th 2010
Friday, August 6, 2010 Tasmanian Country 5 News to prosperous crops Wesley Hazell Show boss affirms rural bent THE new president of the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania says, despite broadening its focus in recent years, the society's core role would always be to promote the rural sector. Last week, long-serving RAST member Wesley Hazell was elected to the roles of president and board chairman following the retirement of former president Paul Geard. Mr Hazell, who joined the organis- ation in 1986 and served as president in 2003 and 2004, is an honorary life councillor of the society. He was previously a president of Ru- ral Youth and chairman of the Agfest Field Days. An apple and cherry grower from Judbury, Mr Hazell said livestock and agricultural dis- plays were the cornerstone of RAST's signa- ture event, the Royal Hobart Show. ''When the greyhounds and the pacing left the showgrounds, people said at the time that the society would go under, but it's been the best thing for us. It's given us the opportunity to do things with our own land that we couldn't do (under our agreement) with the Tote,'' he said. ''The core role (of RAST) is to promote our rural sector, but the society is now involved in new business activities such as the Show- ground Sunday Market, the Show- ground Motor Home Park, and as host to sporting events and activities. ''While the Royal Hobart Show remains a key activity for the society, the future will also see growth in the exhibition of other community activi- ties, as well as the Royal Hobart International Wine Show and the Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards.'' Mr Hazell said Mr Geard led the RAST council through a period of significant growth. The 2010 Royal Hobart Show will be held from October 20-23. BLAIR RICHARDS
