TAS Country : September 2nd 2010
20 Tasmanian Country Friday, September 3, 2010 Stock Report Season strengthens cattle market STRONG: Plenty of good quality yearlings. market TALK Richard Bailey CATTLE markets continue to show strength as spring starts. Supply and demand is ensuring that trade cattle values are strong and at Quoiba this week we saw some very good sales with more selling for over 200c/kg and topping at 235c/kg liv- eweight. At Killafaddy there were more year- lings offered and the quality was good and most made 180c to 205c/kg with most averages around 186c/kg. In Victoria, at Pakenham on Monday most good quality vealers and fed yearlings made 195c to 220c/kg, while most grassfed yearlings sold for 178c to 194c/kg. Locally one would think it will be another month or two before we see any great increase in trade cattle numbers but in Victoria we may see more numbers a little earlier. Export cattle are also holding up well with Tasmanian cow prices very good and heavy beef cows and making 130c to 150c/kg while in Victoria the best heavy cows are making 145c to 166c/kg and leaner types 114c to 151c/kg liv- eweight. In the last two weeks at Quoiba there has been a good selection of Jap-ox bullocks with most selling for 170c to 192c/kg while in Victoria most are being quoted at 177c to 190c/kg liv- eweight. MLA reports that Korean beef im- ports maintained their momentum during July, jumping 21 per cent year- on-year with shipments for the first seven months of 2010 also up 21 per cent. The increased demand has been reflected in higher volumes from Aust- ralia and the US, assisted by a combin- ation of strong consumer demand and low domestic cattle slaughter. Australian volumes for July in- creased 14 per cent year-on-year to 11,648 tonnes taking volumes for the first seven months to 76,649 tonnes which is 9 per cent higher than the same period in 2009. Another good news story, this time from MLA boss David Palmer. From time to time we all like to share in a company-wide celebration when there is real success. The other night at the Crows Nest TAFE was one such event. A group of high profile chefs from Malaysia and Singapore were in town through the MLA Red Majesty Chef Initiative. What a great night with the fusion of Australian beef and lamb matched with the skills of the visiting chefs. ''An eight-course dinner menu was developed by 24 visiting chefs from five- star hotels and independent res- taurants from Malaysia and Singapore such as Westin, Mandarin Oriental. The Red Majesty Chef program was developed by MLA's South East Asia team to promote Australian beef and sheepmeat in modern Chinese cu- isine. The thing I think is important here is that MLA is making a huge effort to ensure that our Asian customers are up to speed with how good our meat is.
