This year's bulls are by a range of sires, some of them being by Richmond Hill First Edition B19 who is by an outcross sire. Another outcross refer- ence sire is Connealy Lead On. The stud focuses on us- ing outcross sires every year to widen the genetic pool for customers. About half are low birth weight heifer bulls, all of them are AM and NH free and they are also covered by the stud's guarantee. Richmond Hill cattle are renowned for their excel- lent structure, tempera- ment and longevity. The Helmsman bull sale will be on property at Bishopsbourne at 11am on Thursday September 16. An analysis of 86,000 feedlot cattle have found that Angus remain healthier than other breeds under feedlot conditions. average daily gain (ADG) v 1.48 kg, and were 10.89kg heavier at harvest (550.44kg compared to 539.51kg. The straightbred group also spent an aver- age of 10 less days on feed. TCSCF reported similar trends in performance. ADG in the group with the most Angus heritage was 1.49kg/day, while the lowest Angus quartile ADG was 1.41kg. Busby says a large por- tion of that is also due to genetic ability to gain. ''Once they hit our feed- lots, they're pretty much on the same nutritional regime and implant strat- egy, so the difference you're seeing would be a combination of health and genetics,'' he says. That health advantage also boosts the Angus calves' overall ability to marble. ''Study after study con- firms cattle that never get sick will have better qual- ity grades,'' Corah says. ''So the fact that they stay healthy just helps them express the potential that's already there.'' In the TCSCF data, straight Angus cattle rea- ched 82 per cent choice and 27.3 per cent qualified for the Certified Angus Beef brand. That's compared to 51.5 per cent choice and 8.9 per cent CAB for the lowest Angus group. Decatur data supports that, too. The solely Angus cattle reached 19.19 per cent CAB, compared to 5.84 per cent for all other black crossbreds, and that made a significant difference in final grid payments. Carcasses from the sole- ly Angus group were worth $1.94/hundred- weight more than their contemporaries. ''That's $15 per head, and that's our profit margin most times,'' Dorn says. Both Dorn and Busby say the Angus advantage is probably due to the pro- ducers who feed with them. ''Our data does say that respiratory illness is 18 per cent heritable, so there is a genetic component, but I believe the difference we're seeing between the low-percentage Angus and the straight bred Angus is more due to the people and how they manage cattle at home,'' Busby says. Dorn says most of their solely Angus cattle come from purebred operations. ''You've probably got more guys who are better managers,'' he notes. The human element can- not be quantified, but acro- ss the years, a combination of breed and breeder has met with measurably su- perior results on the bot- tom line. ''Most of the bulls on offer have some New Zea- land blood in them and include sons of Talooby Zulu, a bull that has given the Dunlop Park cattle a real lift. ''We place a great em- phasis on the carcass qual- ity of our cattle. ''Everything that we have submitted for Meat Standards Australia grad- ing has been accepted and we rely heavily on feed- back form processors and butchers. ''From this we know that our cattle have excellent eye muscle and marbling. ''This year our breeding program will take an excit- ing new direction when we will use two sons of the outstanding Scottish bull Netherton Lord Jordan in our breeding program.
