The man behind Mathews Capital Partners has sunk almost $50 million into becoming the agribusiness's largest shareholder with a 10.9 per cent bloc. Despite investment industry warn- ings, Mr Mathews has shown a grow- ing passion for agriculture. His com- pany is now also the largest share- holder in embattled Tasmanian timber business Gunns. ''Mr Mathews has obviously seen Elders as a cheap opportunity, and one with a lot of value in the long term,'' said Elders' corporate relations general manager Don Murchland. Mathews Capital Partners did not respond to requests for an interview. The Weekly Times aNEW LO OKfor an OLD MATE ! Whistle up some new business with a Tasmanian Country feature...
