TAS Country : September 9th 2010
18 Tasmanian Country Friday, September 10, 2010 The Stock Report A strong buying contingent from the state's North and North-West brightened the season for drought- hardened southern producers at the annual Bridgewater spring store cattle sale, reports Jennifer Crawley Southern sale a TOUGH IN SOUTH: Roberts livestock manager John Denholm A BIG crowd was at the annual Roberts' store spring auction at Bridgewater. About 850 head of cattle went under Philip Brazendale's hammer on a brisk sunny Friday. Scott Reardon, of Rockford at Bothwell, fetched top price of $820 for a pen of Hereford Santa crosses. Auctioneer Brazendale was happy with the end result. ''It was a good sale,'' Mr Brazen- dale said. ''There's only so much store buyers can buy for stock because the return at the other end is pretty insufficient and that deter- mines the buy-in price. ''There's got to be something there for the purchaser. ''There's a limit to what some people can pay for stock but it was a good strong solid market. ''The North and the North-West had a terrific autumn and plenty of feed. We expected most of our compe- tition to come from those areas and most of our buyers who have bought have come from there. ''A lot of North-West farmers will tell you they have had the best autumn in over 20 years, whereas as soon as you come from Campbell Town down it's been one of our worst autumns for the same amount time. It's just the varying Tasmanian climate.'' Mr Brazendale said the large amount of fodder produced last spring was enough to get the south- ern cattle to the market in good condition. Roberts livestock manager John Denholm said it had been tough for cattle owners down south. ''They are battling through the south to hold what they have got,'' Mr Denholm said. Her added that all the sellers were more than happy with the prices they got after the sale. ''The prices reflected the season we've got ahead of us because they are going to find cattle almost unp- rocurable,'' Mr Denholm said. ''Store cattle will be terribly short because of the rains we've had around the country.'' Mr Denholm said the decline in numbers of small butchers and the power of supermarkets and local processing companies was affecting the fat market. ''There's been no incentive to build the herd up because the fat market has been so ordinary.''
