TAS Country : September 23rd 2010
22 Tasmanian Country Friday, September 24, 2010 Ad feature Hay and silage season HIGH EFFICIENCY: Farmers are given a demonstration of Silotite multi-layer film at the Penola workshop. Silage film rolls to next level THE extrusion technology behind the manufacture of silage film has progressed so much recently that a roll of Silotite film now has five layers to ensure opti- mum performance levels in the paddock, a world expert on silage wrapping told farmers at an infor- mation workshop in Penola recently. Lloyd Dawson, technical manager of bpi-agri's UK division is visiting Aust- ralia to discuss ways to achieve high efficiency and productivity in silage wrapping. Mono Layer film In the early days of bale- wrap production almost all products were manufactured as single layer films. Single layer extruders were the only type available at the time and while they were fine for applications like pallet stretch wrap, they gave varying results when producing bale-wrap and that was less than ideal for silage contractors and their customers. In this type of extruder all of the raw materials are mixed together in one chamber prior to extrusion, so there is very little control over where specific ingredients might end up within the layer of film produced. Mono layer films typically show varying qualities within the same batch depending on the climatic conditions, and differing temperatures mean that tack levels can vary from being virtually non-existent to being far too sticky. These films typically have lower puncture resistance and can be very inconsistent when stretching, resulting in varying gauge across the profile of the film. In higher temperatures these films are prone to telescoping during storage, rendering the rolls unusable. Multi-layer film Multi-layer film was pioneered by bpi.agri, the manufacturers of Silotite, in the mid 1980s. This development changed the quality of bale- wrapping film beyond recognition. It allowed specific ingredients within the blend to be controlled and directed to that part of the film where they were most required. So UV stabilizers could be placed on the outer surface of the film to face the elements; tack on the inside where it was most needed and the strength of the film in the inner core layers. All of this combined to create a film with an even stretch, highly effective sealing and enhanced puncture resistance. This high-end extrusion technology continues to advance, enabling manufacturers to produce stronger film with increased oxygen permeability qualities. The Silotite range has evolved as the extrusion technology employed by bpi.agri has progressed from three layers to five layers enabling it to further enhance its innovative film characteristics. Stretch benefits ''A real benefit of five layer technology is film consistency in terms of uniform thickness,'' said Lloyd Dawson. ''This allows it to be stretched up to 70 per cent from its original length. ''This means you can wrap more bales per roll saving time, money and waste.'' Silotite has been developed to perform in a high UV climate.
