TAS Country : October 7th 2010
6 Tasmanian Country Friday, October 8, 2010 News SCHOLARSHIP: Don Martin, passionate about grapes. Grant for study in viticulture A NEW scholarship for Tasmanian winemakers has been announced by the Alcorso Foundation. The $10,000 Don Martin Sustainable Viticulture Fellowship was made poss- ible through a bequest from Dr Martin's estate. The fellowship aims to promote sustainability and professional development in the Tasmanian sector and is backed by the Tas- manian wine sector's peak body, Wine Tasmania. Alcorso Foundation president Caroline Alcorso said Dr Martin was instru- mental in the development of the wine sector in Tas- mania. ''Dr Martin was a CSIRO scientist who was passion- ate about improving wine grapes grown in Tas- mania,'' Ms Alcorso said. ''He was constantly trialling new methods and varieties and continued to work and mentor in the industry after his retire- ment from CSIRO. ''He is remembered for his generosity in sharing his knowledge and exper- tise.'' Wine Tasmania chief executive Sheralee Davies said the award was a unique opportunity for Tasmanian winemakers. ''The Tasmanian wine sector focuses on inno- vation, environmental su- stainability, research and collaboration,'' Ms Davies said. ''In offering this scholar- ship to an industry profes- sional in Don Martin's name, the Alcorso Foun- dation contributes to a cul- ture of continuous improve- ment in the industry.'' Tasmanian-based profes- sionals working in the wine sector are eligible for the fellowship. The scholarship pays for winemakers to travel out- side the state to experience an operating vineyard or winery, or to take part in master classes or other learning opportunities with a focus on innovation, sustainability and best practice. The fellowship was an- nounced at the Alcorso Foundation's 2010 fund- raising dinner. Money raised supports the foundation's projects in the arts, environment and social justice. Expressions of interest for the award will be called for next year.
