TAS Country : October 14th 2010
4 Tasmanian Country Friday, October 15, 2010 News NOURISHING: Carlton Heres holds kelp stipes. Behind him are family members, from left, Margo Heres, Wyomi Belle Heres, Kevin Heres, Bradley Cox and Amali Cox. Pictures: CHRIS KIDD WE NEEDED THAT: Cattle eagerly go for a feed of bull kelp. Rolled gold in washed-up kelp JENNIFER CRAWLEY STAFFORD Heres was born and raised at Marrawah and believes it is the best place in the world. He also believes Marrawah Gold is the best fertiliser around. The children of Stafford and Margo Heres are the fifth gener- ation of the family to live at Marrawah in the state's far North-West. The Heres ran a dairy on their 242ha Green Point Beach property called Shanforth Park until 1995. ''Our kids got to school age and we knew we had to either build a new dairy or get out,'' Stafford said. It was the Heres' herd of cows that led them to the kelp and the idea of a liquid fertiliser. They run between 180 and 200 Angus breeders. ''We used to take our cattle down on the beach in winter time,'' Stafford said. ''They went straight to the kelp --- the animals told us there was some- thing in it that they needed.'' In 1997 they hit upon the idea of a liquid fertiliser, and re- leased their first product in 2001. Marrawah Gold liquid ferti- liser is made from storm-cast bull kelp collected from the beach. Stafford said the stipe or stem of the giant bull kelp contained all known trace elements and nutrients. ''That's the part of the plant that the stock eat, not the fronds,'' he said. Stafford admits he probably is a bit old-fashioned, but when he sits in his kitchen and looks out at the water he is very grateful. ''We live in a beautiful place and how happy we are,'' he said. ''I can't remember the last time I had a vet here. Everything is in harmony.'' The Heres do not use super phosphate or chemicals on their farm. ''Everything has a reason,'' Stafford said. ''Some of the bugs are there to eat the other bugs. ''If you haven't got healthy soil, what eats it is not going to be healthy. ''The same people coming out of a doctor's surgery are the ones you see coming out of a take-away shop --- same differ- ence with stock.'' Marrawah Gold is used in a wide range of agricultural mar- kets, including horticulture and viticulture. It is sold here and on the mainland and exported to Malaysia and South Korea. It is sprayed on Pipers Brook vineyards and big, broadacre farms at Longford and Cressy. Stafford's father Kevin, 86, still comes to work at the fertiliser factory. ''He's the inspiration behind it,'' Stafford said. ''He's always looked outside the square as a farmer.'' The Heres children work in the business, and five locals are employed in the factory. Stafford said his mother Betty Heres, 82, has a rose garden ''to die for'' --- and it's fertilised with bull kelp. 03679 Call 1300 WIDE SPAN (1300 94 33 77) Check out our full range online at www.sheds.com.au Zinc = Zincalume all over / CB = Colorbond walls & trim, Zincalume Roof All promotional pricing is valid for 14 days from date of quotation.
