THE Leith White Suffolk stud owned by John and Kerry McLauchlan will of- fer their 80 top lambplan assessed rams at Valma Downs, Whitemore, on Wednesday, November 10. Progeny of some of Aust- ralia's top Carcase + fig- ured sires will be for sale. Also on offer will be a number of rams sired by lower birth weight sires. These rams have been run together, weighed at birth and later weighed and scanned. While the Leith sale rams birth weight ebvs are lower than the terminal sire average birth weights, the Carcase + indexes are considerably higher. The Leith stud's aim is to maximise productive traits like growth and mu- scle while maintaining downward pressure on birth weights. This maximises both lamb survival and value per head and therefore profit. Suffolk lambs' show success IN FAVOUR: Suffolk- Williamwood lambs are becoming increasingly popular. A NUMBER of White Suffolk-sired lambs were successful at the Campbell Town recently winning the heavy export 22.1kg and above class in the Paddock to Plate competition. The winning lambs were sired by John and Kerry McLauchlan's Leith White Suffolk rams out of Wil- liamwood Merino ewes. This cross is becoming increasingly popular in Australia due to the White Suffolk's easy-care attri- butes, good growth rates and high carcass values. This year, Charles and Lucinda Booth's William- wood operation sold 1100 White Suffolk Merino cross lambs to average $123.50. Andrew Calvert from TP Jones said the winning lambs were selected from the second run of lambs prepared for sale by Wil- liamwood manager John Goss. One of the requirements in the hoof-and-hook com- petition was the need for the exhibitor to select one lamb to be killed at Tas Quality Meats and two to be shown at the Campbell Town Show. Equal points were awarded for each section, with the highest combined total winning the class. Both the on-farm breeding and manage- ment of the lambs and the ability to select lambs to fit specifications were competition conditions. Peter Williams sup- ports profitable sheep production systems so it was fitting that the first export class competition winners were part of a well managed farm oper- ation.
