10 Tasmanian Country Friday, November 12, 2010 STAR TURN: James Blundell will perform and judge the only Tasmanian heat of Telstra Road to Tamworth. Heavyweights for Huon Show JENNIFER CRAWLEY BIG country singing acts and even bigger animals are among the star attractions at the 64th Huon Show at the Ranelagh Recreation Ground on Saturday. Country music superstar James Blundell will perform and be guest judge in the only Tasmanian heat of the national talent compe- tition, Telstra Road to Tamworth. Heavy horses are the other star attraction, with two mainland judges officiating in the saddle horse classes and draught horse sec- tions. Draught horses from the North and the South will be judged by renowned heavy-horse judge Tim Peel. Mr Peel will also conduct a heavy horse workshop on Sunday. The Huon Show is living up to its reputation as a strong agricultural show, with a large range of cattle and judges from around the state and from the mainland. Cattle, sheep, alpacas, cavies, dogs, poultry, commercial cattle, sheep and dairy goats will be on display. Judging starts at 9.30am. The alpaca judge, Rick Hodgson from New South Wales, was invited to train as a judge in 1999 and has been appointed an A Grade judge for the Australian Alpaca Association. He judges at shows in Australia and in New Zealand each year. Mr Hodgson judged the Canadian Futurity in 2005 and 2010, the UK National Show in 2006, the Australian National Show in 2007, and the NZ National Show in 2009. ''The Huon Show Society is pleased to have such a worthy judge officiating this year,'' Huon Agricultural Society secretary Marion Woodward said. The poultry section will feature many varieties and a few rare breeds of fowl in the Poultry Pavilion. Specialist breeder Peter Moate will give talks on the Rhode Island Red, which is this year's feature poultry breed. A section for first-time poultry exhibitors will be held this year. Huonville Primary School will feature an exhibition of pupils' artworks, and baby chickens will also be on display. ''It will be well worth a visit to the Poultry Pavilion,'' Mrs Woodward said. Agfest chairman Anthony Coad is the official guest and the show society will have a dining room opposite Homecrafts, which will serve morning and afternoon teas and lunches And the usual gourmet food and wine stalls will grace the ground. ''A good response has been received for commercial ground space, with a number of exhibitors exhibiting at the Huon Show for the first time,'' Mrs Woodward said. ''The show is a truly agricultural show and it is pleasing to still get support from agricultural- based businesses. ''The show could not be conducted without this support.'' A $3000 grant from the Huon Valley Council went towards upgrading showground power. SHOW DETAILS ADMISSION: Adult, $10; child, $5; family, $25. Parking adjacent to the showground.
