TAS Country : January 13th 2011
16 Tasmanian Country Friday, January 14, 2011 The Stock Report Breeders hoping for flood of interest market TALK Richard Bailey 'The other side of the coin is the very good season through almost all NSW and Victoria, with many parts of NSW having their best season in two decades.' WHAT an unbelievable country we live in -- bushfires and drought in parts of Western Australia and horrendous floods in Queensland. It has been well documented what the drought in WA has meant to their sheep flock, with huge numbers being trucked to destinations in South Aust- ralia, Victoria and NSW. Many of these sheep have been slaughtered and many breeding ewes will be used to replenish depleted flocks in the eastern states. The ramifications of the floods will not be fully known for months, but in the short term transporting cattle and feed to feedlots and meatworks will be difficult because there has been exten- sive damage to road and rail links. The general feeling from market analysts up north is that there will be a shortage of cattle to process in the first quarter of 2011, with a pick-up in the second quarter, then big numbers in the second half of the year. It is difficult to get a clear idea of how many cattle have been lost in the floods, but one would think there will be substantial losses. The other side of the coin is the very good season through almost all NSW and Victoria, with many parts of NSW having their best season in two decades. This will in turn stem the supply of livestock and until the numbers flow from up north one would have to think there will be a general shortage of cattle numbers coming to the market. Does that mean higher prices? I hope so! Lamb and mutton prices have start- ed the year on a high, with many lambs at Bendigo on Monday being quoted between 530c and 570c/kg dressed weight. Though our markets aren't quite that strong, they are still very good, with heavy lambs selling from $130 to $150 and trade lambs making $120 to $135 a head.
