TAS Country : February 3rd 2011
14 Tasmanian Country Friday, February 4, 2011 The Stock Report market TALK Richard Bailey Lamb prices are nothing to feel sheepish about IT was another good week in Tasmanian saleyards for anyone selling lambs or cattle. We have seen lamb prices continue to rise, with a top price at Killafaddy of $171, and at Quoiba most heavy lambs made $158 to $176 a head. In Victorian saleyards, most trade and export lambs were quoted between 580c and 640c/kg dressed weight, which is just unbelievable for any time of the year, let alone in January and February. Most processors have raised their over-the-hooks prices in recent times and it really is a ''watch this space'' type of situation because works that don't keep up will discover numbers are very hard to find. Still on lambs, another real positive is the news that Australian exports to South East-Asia and China increased by 8 per cent year-on-year in 2010 to a record 35,071 tonnes. This was despite tight lamb supplies, the strong Australian dollar and historically high lamb prices. While demand for lamb breast and flap from mainland China remained firm during 2010, exports to Malaysia and Taiwan jumped 45 per cent and 41 per cent respectively. This record export figure puts it in at about the same level as the US, which means we have three export markets (with the Middle East) taking more than 30,000 tonnes per year -- a very healthy situation for our lamb industry. All cattle prices are also stronger, with big numbers of trade cattle making more than 200c/kg and many vealers between 210c and 225c/kg at both Quoiba and Killafaddy. Once again over-the-hook prices have also risen and prices for MSA- graded trade cattle are at their best levels for some years. With disruption to supply in the northern states, this situation may last a little longer. Bullock prices are also on the up, with heavy bullocks (over 600kg) making 185c to 195c/kg, which means some of these cattle are making more than $1400 a head. It is interesting to note that Argentinean beef exports during 2010 declined 57 per cent as their beef production contracted by an estimated 23 per cent. A combination of government intervention and previous drought years resulted in a sharp decline in the cattle herd, and rebuilding efforts in 2010 have accentuated the production decline. Russia is one of Argentina's biggest export destinations, so with the lack of supply the Russians are looking elsewhere and Australia has been able to take up some of the slack -- though they don't like paying top dollar! This augurs well for our beef exports in the near to medium future, one would think. 2077533-110204 Killafaddy Tuesday February 8 Auction Engineering & Irrigation Equipment Thursday February 24 Wellington Street, Longford Account: Agline Irrigation Photo ID required for bidder registration NO BUYERS PREMIUM - GST may apply Enq: Kevin Matkovich 0417 325936 email@example.com Quoiba Store Cattle -- Today at 11.30am Quoiba Monday February 7 200 Crossbred ewes 4yrs For full details of Clearing Sales, Wool and Livestock Market Reports visit our website www.robertsltd.com.au Hobart 6235 1444 Launceston 6337 1555 Smithton 6452 2511 Devonport 6424 8271 Southern Sales Northern Sales North West Sales DO YOU KNOW YOUR OVINE (SHEEP) JOHNES STATUS?
