TAS Country : March 17th 2011
8 Tasmanian Country Friday, March 18, 2011 PLEASED AS PUNCH: Some of the Rushy Lagoon team at last week's Powranna weaner sale, Carly Moore, left, Rodney Moore and Aleesha Fennell. Tasmanian cattle breeders had plenty to smile about last week after one of the best weaner sales on record at Powranna. Karolin MacGregor reports A BIG crowd of local and interstate buyers turned out for last week's Pow- ranna weaner sale, where prices climbed to new levels. About 3700 calves went under the hammer at the season opening sale. A pen of Angus Here- ford cross steers from Connorville topped the sale making $1000 a head. The steers averaged 405kg and sold for almost $2.50/kg liveweight. Roberts livestock man- ager Warren Johnston said it was the best sale he had ever seen at Powran- na. ''It was a phenomenal sale and I think it was the biggest crowd we've ever seen there as well,'' Mr Johnston said. ''We've seen them sell- ing pretty well at Quoiba recently, but standing over 3000 plus calves, we weren't sure how it would go. It certainly exceeded all our expectations.'' About five mainland buyers from NSW and Victoria were active dur- ing the sale and bought about 30 per cent of the yarding. Mr Johnston said the mainland buyers were given plenty of compe- tition from locals. ''I think the main thing is there's just a lack of cattle right across the eastern seaboard,'' he said. ''The export market is very healthy at the mo- ment and so is the dom- estic market.'' Steers across the yard- ing averaged $742 a head. Mr Johnston said some of the lighter steers sold for up to $3.60/kg liv- eweight. In the heifer section, a pen of Angus heifers from The Stock Report Wildlife couple dishes out Tunna lovin' From Page 7 Locals and tourists are amazed by the young wombat. ''Tunna's picture has gone all round the world,'' Stephanie said. ''Scotland, Canada, South America, US, Afrcia, he's all over the place. They're fascinated by him, you're just sitting in the car and you're feeding him, and they come up, he's done a lot to raise awareness.'' Tunna cuddles into Wayne's armpit looking for privacy. ''He goes to sleep real quick,'' Wayne said. ''He has an on-off button.'' The couple have two large pens on their 37ha property where they house wildlife. The first pen was built from materials from Bunn- ings hardware store at Moonah ''We had a joey with us one day who had to have a bottle,'' Ste- phanie said. One of Bunnings managers saw the joey and told the couple to contact the social club, the members of which donated shadecloth, wire and star pickets and came out one weekend to help build the second pen.
