TAS Country : March 17th 2011
Friday, March 18, 2011 Tasmanian Country 9 GOOD NUMBERS: About 3700 calves went under the hammer at last week's season opening sale. Organisers were delighted with the response. Pictures: KAROLIN MacGREGOR PLENTY OF INTEREST: Local and interstate buyers turned out in force. It was a phenomenal sale and I think it was the biggest crowd we've ever seen there as well.' Powranna wow factor Shene made the top price of $900 a head. The heifers were part of a truckload purchased specifically for a Russian export order. Heifers across the yard- ing averaged $690 a head. Mr Johnston said a large percentage of the heifers had been bought to go back into paddocks for breeding programs. With about 400 calves at last Thursday's sale, Rod- ney Moore, his daughter Carly and station hand Aleesha Fennell from Rushy Lagoon could not have been happier. The Rushy Lagoon steers topped at $785 a head, which Mr Moore said was a fantastic price for 285kg spring drop calves. ''It's the best sale I've seen and I've been at Rushy for 25 years,'' he said. ''There's just not the number of cattle around now and with all the feed on the mainland, every- one's chasing them.'' Mr Moore said most of the Rushy Lagoon calves were either straight-bred Angus or Hereford-Angus crosses. After a terrific season in the state's north-east, Mr Moore said all their calves were about 20kg- 30kg heavier this season. He said with about 3200 breeding cows on the property, the weaner sales season was a busy time for the Rushy La- goon team. The Stock Report Why Not Get SmartTSi! WHY WEIGHT?
