TAS Country : March 24th 2011
Friday, March 25, 2011 Tasmanian Country 19 News Hi-tech path to boost farm productivity KAROLIN MacGREGOR MAKING the most of technology was the theme at the recent Southern Farming Systems Precision Agricul- ture Field Day at Cressy. More than 100 farmers from around the state turned out for the day, which also included demonstrations of the latest cultivation equipment. One of the key guest speakers was Andrew Whitlock, from Precision Agri- culture in Victoria. Mr Whitlock said more farmers were now using GPS and digital mapping technology to improve productivity. ''A lot of farmers have GPS equipment in their machinery now, but up until recently information they were collect- ing wasn't really being used,'' he said. ''Across Australia now I'd say there are probably 10 per cent of farmers that are implementing the systems, but I think we'll see a big jump in that number in the next few years.'' Mr Whitlock said farmers with auto steering technology on their tractors could use that information to create contour mapping. He said those maps could then be used to identify areas of a paddock that may become water- logged, or dry out faster. He said digital mapping could prove particularly useful in Tasmania, where soil types can vary significantly across a farm or even a paddock. Mr Whitlock said the mapping could also be used to record changes to the property throughout the season. He said yield and gross margin mapping could help producers improve efficiency on their properties. ''With yield mapping we can work out which areas of the farm or the paddock are producing the most and which parts aren't performing as well,'' Mr Whitlock said. ''We can then use that information and take it a step further to do gross margin maps.'' He said this could help identify areas of paddocks that may not be worth planting particular crops in, depending on seasonal conditions. ''A lot of farmers might look at parts of the paddock which aren't growing as well and think 'Well, at least it's growing something', but if you look at the yields from that area, it might actually be costing them money and they might have been better off just not planting that area,'' Mr Whitlock said. Southern Farming Systems chair- man Nick Taylor said precision agri- culture had a lot of practical appli- cations Tasmanian farmers could use. ''The best advantage of the precision agriculture stuff is things like the variable rate irrigation,'' he said. ''People with undulating paddocks or variable soil types can use it to turn individual nozzles on and off to make sure they are putting on exactly the right amount of water in those areas, so that means they get really even cover- age, which can make a big difference to overall yields in some crops.'' Southern Farming System is a grower-driven organisation that tar- gets research programs and field days at topics farmers have requested.
