TAS Country : April 7th 2011
20 Tasmanian Country Friday, April 8, 2011 2063971-110408 Hereford efficiencies make perfect sense in a cost-driven economy. Whether you need bulls, steers or heifers, Herefords will give you excellent feed conversion, hardiness, fertility, plus the famed Hereford temperament that can help reduce input costs. If you are concerned about the lack of the above attributes in your herd, Hereford bulls could provide an economical solution and give your herd a great boost with hybrid vigour. Herefords are low maintenance cattle that give you long term profits. So check out www.herefordsaustralia.com.au but better still, go out and buy a Hereford bull. Jamena poll herefords welcome Markowen Eaglehawk E10 bought from south australia for $26000 breaking the on sale farm record for SA. GUILFORD Poll Herefords will hold their 37th annual bull sale on May 3 at 1.30pm. On offer will be 38 bulls. As well as being scanned and performance recorded with Poll Hereford group breedplan, they have all been serving ability and semen tested. The bulls have also been tested negative PI for BVDV and vaccinated with Pestigard. Guilford believes that this group of bulls may be the best they have offered. Sires of the sale bulls include Debarry Eden who was bought in 2005 for $25,000. Eden is breeding very well, siring dark coat- ed calves with extra length. His EBVs are outstanding, being low for birth weight, high growth, and high milk at +26. Eden has been used in more than 28 studs countrywide, and has 560 progeny analysed by breedplan. Another sire rep- resented in the sale is Guilford Zeus Z1 who was Junior and Grand Cham- pion Poll Hereford Bull, and Junior Interbreed Champion Bull at Royal Hobart in 2005. Also rep- resented is Guilford Ato- mic A3, who is producing calves with thickness, mu- scle and extra growth. Four bulls represent Mt Raven Hijacker, a low birth weight, high milk and muscle. There are five sons of Allendale National W168 on offer who sold for the record price of $85,000 at Dubbo in 2003. Most bulls can be viewed on www.guilford.com.au Simplot success SEVEN years ago Sim- plot decided to rebuild its Angus-dominated cow herd to improve fertility, longevity and efficiency --- and today 40 per cent of its replace- ment heifers have white faces. It was decided to in- corporate Hereford gen- etics into the cow herd --- a move which not only achieved the initial goals but produced mar- ketable black baldy feeder cattle and ideal replacement females. ''Seven years ago we began a 10-15 year proj- ect to turn our herd over to maximise our herd efficiency with a moder- ate framed, efficient, crossbred cow herd,'' said Simplot veterin- arian Dick Frederick- son. ''If you're a commer- cial producer hoping to produce a better steer calf to sell, over the long term, you will increase the value and pro- duction of your cow herd by utilising Here- fords for cross breeding and hybrid vigor.'' ''The best way to reach these goals was to use AI so Simplot searched the semen companies for the Here- ford bull to meet their needs and they came up with the ABS bull En- hancer.'' Of the 5000 replace- ment heifers to be bred via AI each spring, all solid-colored heifers are bred to this bull. All black cattle are bred to Hereford, and females with white markings are bred to Angus. Performance packs a punch THE 27th Annual Bull Sale of Quamby Plains and Che- ster Poll Herefords is full of high performing, quality bulls. The bulls have been selected from more than 280 cows, and are muscular with good colour and excel- lent confirmation. They have very strong breedplan figures for birth weight, fertility, milk, growth and muscle. There are bulls in the top one per cent for selection indexes, and bulls with exceptional low birth weights ideal for mating with heifers. White face calves are now equalling top prices in weaner sales throughout southern Australia. The merits of white face are again being realised through temperament and extra growth. All stud cattle are run on grass, parallel with com- mercial herds under the same pasture and manage- ment conditions. All cows rear a calf, and the heifers calve as two- year-olds. All bulls have been vet- erinary checked for fer- tility and soundness, and they have been PI tested. They have also been vac- cinated against pestivirus and had two vaccinations of 7:1. The commercial calves of both Chester and Quamby Plains are in de- mand year after year, prov- ing they continue to per- form. The annual bull sale at- tracts attention from meat companies, Woolworths, as well as store cattle buyers who come back year after year. 2 INSPECTION, ENQUIRIES & CATALOGUES PH: PHILIP DAVIE 62871444 ONLINE CATALOGUE WITH PHOTOS OF MOST LOTS WWW.GUILFORD.COM.AU LOT GUILFORD ENTREPRENEUR E7 .
