Dam drastic measures THE National Irrigators Council has demanded all water used in farm dams, forestry plantations and to supply stock be measured and licensed. ''Irrigators are firmly of the view that all water use should be accounted for and adhere to the principle that if you can't measure it, you can't manage it,'' said NIC chief executive Danny O'Brien. ''That's why we believe all use should be brought into the entitle- ments system, as even minor use can add up.'' Farmers in Victoria and NSW oppose the NIC's call, arguing it is impractical and too expensive. But the NIC says a pro- posed Murray Darling Basin plan means they will have to wear the full im- pact of cuts to diversions and interceptions. The Victorian Farmers Federation and NSW Far- mers say that ''basin state'' governments have already moved to regulate the de- velopment of dams. GOAT-CHANGE: Once involved in dairy and engineering, Mary and Nigel Target have switched to goat breeding. Pictures: ROSS MARSDEN MARY and Nigel Target are on a long journey together. ''We have known each other since we were kids,'' Mary said. The couple, who grew up in southern Africa, are successful goat farmers at Beauty Point in the north. Mary has a dairy background and Nigel is a mechanical engineer. They started farming goats five years ago after completing animal husbandry and farm-management courses.''We wanted to do something completely different,'' Mary said. They farm Boers --- a South African breed bred for its meat. The Targets run 50 breeding does and three bucks and run a 150-strong herd on their 16ha property. The MLA-accredited farm sells live goats and uses a licensed abattoir when the goats are three to seven months old. The Targets supply Casalinga butchery in Launceston. Goat is cooked the same as lamb. ''It goes well in Moroccan dishes using tagines, and leaves a very clean taste in your mouth,'' Mary said. The meat is low in calories and saturated fats. The Targets are busy with kidding, weighing, tagging, marking, vaccinating and updating records. The goats are fed grain before joining and kidding. Foot paring is another job, done with foot shears. The Targets know each of the goats by name and say they are intelligent and social animals. ''The more time you spend with them the more they produce for you, it also makes them very easy to handle,'' Mary said. Goat farming is very similar to sheep farming, Mary said. ''I think there were quiet a few raised eyebrows when we first started,'' she said. The Targets have completely refenced the property with double and triple-strand electric fencing, and have never had an escape. Goats go very well with cattle, Mary said. ''Beef or dairy farmers can run goats with their cattle because they eat different grasses. Their parasites are different so they complement each other very well.'' Goats are very selective and fussy. They feed on about 30 per cent of trees and shrubs. The goats have a couple of runs where they eat blackberries and blackwoods growing up near the fences. Mary said she and Nigel were very happy to share their knowledge and information on goat farming with others. ''I think goats are misunderstood generally,'' she said.
