Picture: RAOUL KOCHANOWSKI land THIS Jennifer Crawley Last l DENNIS Palmer is about to retire --- not from life, not from his farm, but from the butcher shop he has worked for the past 32 years. It is a bittersweet decision for the popular North Hobart butcher, who said he will have mixed feelings when he closes the doors at Jacobson's Meats next Thursday, April 21. ''I will miss the people the most,'' Dennis said. Dennis and his wife Janine have a 260ha farm at Tunnack in the Southern Midlands. The farm supplies most of the lamb for Jacobson's, the rest comes from the Bridgewater saleyard. ''Everything is Tasmanian,'' Dennis said. Heathcote Farm has been in the Palmer family for six generations. It was settled by Alfred Arthur Palmer in 1863. He was a soldier in the British Army who fought the Maori Wars in New Zealand before settling at Tunnack. Heathcote farm spreads out across a picturesque valley. ''It's nice --- good reliable country,'' Dennis said. ''Stock hangs on really well at Tunnack because it's a bit greener. It's a wet pocket of ground, you get a lot of rain in the easterly weather --- the season hangs on. ''All the feed has gone in Campania and Richmond and everybody's out of their lambs by now, but ours are still on grass and still going really well.'' The Palmers run a handful of Herefords and 400 crossbred ewes and Hampshire Down rams. Janine and Dennis were on the farm drenching and putting the rams out last weekend. Dennis has worked long hours as a butcher --- from 7am to 6pm and every Saturday morning in the shop and on the farm on weekends. ''Some days I could lay down on the floor of the butcher shop and go to sleep, I get so tired but I never get tired out on the farm,'' he said. ''There's no stress,'' Janine said. Dennis said: ''You go through hell and fire to get here, once you get here she's all worth it.'' The Palmers have seen many changes in North Hobart and in the meat industry.
