TAS Country : April 28th 2011
30 Tasmanian Country Friday, April 29, 2011 2011 PROPER FIT: Michelle Shepherd's horse-rug business was born when she could not find what she wanted. Picture: CHRIS KIDD Perfect fit for every breed EMMA HOPE WHEN horse breeder Michelle Shepherd struggled to find rugs for her animals that fitted prop- erly she decided the only sol- ution was to start making them herself. ''We put three years into researching materials and have worked very closely with fabric specialists to find the best prod- ucts for horse rugs,'' Mrs She- pherd said. ''Our business is growing strong and fast due to our own designs, our own specialised sizing, quality control and cus- tomer service.'' Based in Forth, on the North- West coast, Horseware is a family-owned and operated business. ''We've been breeding Welsh Mountain ponies for 25 years, so we know what is needed.'' As well as selling to retailers, Horseware's online sales have been popular, with the company selling all over Australia and in New Zealand. ''The business is really grow- ing through repeat customers and word of mouth.'' Mrs Shepherd said it was the material and cut of the rugs that made them unique and popular among horse owners. ''Our Denier rugs are made from a highly advanced ma- terial that is strong and water- proof as well as breathable on the horses skin.'' She said many big companies made products that were ex- pensive but not effective. ''They are too big to really worry about what the horse and owner needs. They worry about the cost and their mark-up.'' N 102 North St SCANIA R-Series International Truck of the Year And that's how we like it. Why?
