TAS Country : September 1st 2011
18 Tasmanian Country Friday, September 2, 2011 The Stock Report Tougher beef testing tipped for export markets JENNY KELLY AUSTRALIAN meatworks selling beef to the United States are likely to face more costly and rigorous testing for E. coli bacteria as lobby groups in America fight for improved food safety. And a leading Tasmanian exporter has been asked to take part in a trial testing of meat for pathogens. Former under-secretary for Food Safety with the Bush Administration, Dr Richard Raymond, said there was intense pressure in the US to clamp down on food poisoning outbreaks and beef was a prime target. He believed US authorities would declare six food pathogens (nicknamed ''the big six'') as adulterants. Only one other pathogen E. coli 0157, which can cause a deadly form of food poisoning in badly cooked or uncooked food, has been declared adulterant in the US, making testing for it manda- tory. Dr Raymond said many US beef processors, and the CostCo supermar- ket group, already tested meat for the six pathogens, all a form of E. coli. Exporter Peter Greenham, Greenham & Sons, which operates abattoirs in Tasmania and Victoria said CostCo had recently approached them to be involved in a pilot program to test for the incidence of the same six pathogens in Australian beef. Mr Greenham said the prospect of increased meat testing was an issue, because it added to the cost of pro- duction at a time when exporters were struggling with the high exchange rate, limited supplies of cattle, and global market uncertainty.
