TAS Country : November 24th 2011
Friday, November 25, 2011 Tasmanian Country 21 Quality is in eye of beholder when it comes to fabric WOOL REPORT Eric Hutchinson THIS week we had a group of retailers from Korea visiting the state. They were accompanied by their fabric supplier, who is one of the leading weavers in Korea, and a camera crew doing a promotion piece that will be aired up to 10 times on a Seoul commercial channel in the early part of the new year. This visit is a follow-up to the initial sale of wool that we made to the weaver six months ago for a trial test marketing campaign in menswear next winter season. The initial 12 tonnes allows the weaver enough scope to develop sam- ples along with enough bulk material to test with one or two of the retail companies. We will now work with these re- tailers in developing promotional ma- terial to position the product and if we have some success then the volume potential for next season is around 100 tonnes. Following on from our comments regarding ultrafine wool last week it was interesting to hear the opinions of the retailers in a country that has had a demand in the past for 13.5 and 14.5 micron material in suitings. The volume sold in this area is naturally very small. However, it is from their standpoint important in terms of presenting the suit brand in a positive light with consumers. The whole notion that finer is better is frankly misrepresenting the notion of quality as we discussed last week in this column. What I found interesting in exploring this further with the retailers was they also realise this strategy is fraught with danger and are looking for alternative messages they can convey to con- sumers, different representations of this notion of ''quality''. There are many ways this can be done objectively by selecting the best fibre based on for example low coef- ficient of variation (CV) in fibre diam- eter, or sourcing from producers that have been putting genetic selection pressure on certain wool character- istics such as softness or staple strength, for example. Another measure of quality may be more subjective and may include the origin of the fibre or the management techniques employed by the producer. The better the lines of communi- cation we have with customers the better understanding we can have of their needs and how to develop appro- priate responses.
