TAS Country : January 5th 2012
Friday, January 6, 2012 Tasmanian Country 9 Good times for producers market TALK Richard Bailey WELL here we are at the beginning of 2012, and if I am any judge, things look pretty good in the livestock industry although no doubt we will have a cou- ple of challenges thrown in along the way. I travelled the Mud Walls Rd between the Mid- land Highway and Camb- ridge at the weekend and I can't remember the last time I saw that part of the state look so well. There is feed every- where and the crops look great. The week before Christ- mas I was in Sydney at the National Livestock Market Reporters' ''get together'' and we were treated to two excellent speakers, Tim McRae, who is an econom- ist with Meat & Livestock Australia and is the chief market analyst, and Aaron Iori, who is the regional MLA manager for Asia and Greater China. I walked out of the meet- ing with so many positive thoughts about where the beef and sheep export in- dustries are headed. There are some challenging mar- kets, but in general the growth expected is excel- lent news for our producers. Aaron spoke of a new trend where the children in many Asian countries get to choose the meals they will be eating. Hence a lot of the Aust- ralian meat promotions are aimed at the younger generation. They stress points like ''red meat is fun, and im- proves the brain!'' This is a high focus for Asian famil- ies as they want their children educated to the highest level. The Chinese market is obviously very exciting but they only take certain cuts; for example they will take all the lamb flap we can send them. However, we have to find markets for the rest. It is very high on MLA's agenda to make sure we have different markets for all the different parts of a lamb or a beast. At the moment we are exporting about 50 per cent of our total lamb pro- duction and 15 years ago we only exported 10 per cent, and both Tim and Aaron can only see that growing. Tim McRae told us that a group of industry chiefs sat down and looked for the negatives in the lamb in- dustry and the only one they could find was poss- ibly price (too expensive) but with the middle class incomes growing so quickly around the world they are not too concerned. Just as an example of China's growth, the Hilton Hotel chain will build 100 more new hotels in that country over the next year and one could assume the other major chains will do the same. They all have to serve top class meat dishes! MLA is spending a lot of time with Chinese chefs and this is a continuing challenge as chefs are poorly paid so the turnover is high -- therefore the training must be ongoing. Tim McRae talked about the cattle herd in the US being at the lowest level for 50 years and he sees our 90 CL (chemical lean) beef going into the US, improv- ing in price during the year. From our perspective this is mainly cow beef and some lean crossbred steer beef. Tim also expects the Russian market to grow during the year as they are starting to buy better cuts of beef. Yet he sees little chal- lenge from the South American countries. The growth of Brazil's middle class is so great that they are eating most of their better beef and are only exporting in the mar- kets we really don't want to be in. Finally, there is a huge amount of damaged grain in NSW and Queensland. This will end up as fairly cheap feed grain and will be a very good back-up if there is an oversupply of lambs or cattle over the next six months.
