TAS Country : January 13th 2012
Friday, January 13, 2012 Tasmanian Country 7 The Stock Report Sound result from Tamar market TALK Richard Bailey KEEN INTEREST: Elders agents get down to work selling at Weymouth Farm at this week's Tamar sales. WE are now two weeks into the new year and saleyard numbers were patchy in Tasmanian yards and lower than ex- pected in Victorian cen- tres. Much of the focus in Victoria has been the an- nual weaner calf sales in Western Victoria and also Wodonga. At Wodonga, agents yarded 12,918 cattle over three days and averaged $765/head with cattle be- ing bought by restockers and backgrounders from far north of NSW to Bal- larat in Western Victoria. Many of the steer calves worked out at 230c to 255c/kg liveweight. At both Casterton and Hamilton, in Western Vic- toria, most steer calves were quoted at 220c to 235c/kg, with overall re- sults being similar to slightly better than last year. Many were bought to go into NSW and some into Queensland with also very solid local compe- tition. In our local saleyards we are seeing restockers competing with butchers and processors for good quality vealers and year- lings and in particular, steers. At Killafaddy this week we saw restockers pay 222c to 245c/kg or $855 to $894 for steer vealers and 202c to 229c/kg or $821 to $934/head for yearling steers. There are also reports that there are quite large numbers of cattle, young and grown, being bought in Victoria destined for finishing in Tasmania. There is that much grass in the state at the moment and cattle pro- ducers need something to eat it! There were plenty of store lambs for sale dur- ing the week with the annual Tamar Valley lamb sale (all on account of the Archer families) held on Wednesday. The quality was very good, although because of big lambing percentages, there were more twins and triplets. There were 7726 lambs sold to average $80.71/head with a few top lambs being bought by JBS Swift to kill for $115 to $121. The best stores made $80 to $100, seconds $80 to $90 and lighter $65 to $78/head. There were a couple of loads bought by a Bendigo agent and the rest were bought by Tasmanian interests to be finished here. Although these prices are not as high as last year, they are pretty fair for both sel- ler and buyer. As an example, one of the vendors sold their en- tire drop of 2800 lambs and averaged $85/head which is a very sound result. There is still some room for profit for the buyers as well. It must be remem- bered that many prime lambs are only selling from $110 to $130/head at the moment with lower skin prices tak- ing their toll. Most woolly skins were quoted at $12/head this week compared with over $20 a couple of months ago. Bullock bonanza finds easier demand THE ANNUAL bullock bonanza was held at Quoi- ba on Wednesday. The offering of 217 qual- ity bullocks opened to an easier demand and this trend continued right through out the day. A total of 449 cattle came forward for the sale. Top pen award went to four Angus steers from DA & MT McLaren of Wilmot. They weighed 706kg and made 188c/kg for $1328 per head. Best single steer was a Poll Hereford on behalf of AJ Hart of Castra weigh- ing 644kg at 192c/kg on $1236. Most bullocks realised from $170c/kg to 185c/kg. Trade cattle also met slightly easier rates apart from a few top quality lines which held firm. Heifer vealers topped at 239c/kg. Steer vealers made to 235c/kg, most yearlings re- alised from 195c/kg to 210c/kg. The 58 cows and bulls met reasonably firm mar- ket. Best beef cows sold from 142c/kg to a top of 172c/kg, while beef bulls topped at 157c/kg.
