TAS Country : January 13th 2012
Friday, January 13, 2012 Tasmanian Country 15 Special feature Irrigation, pumps and water storage Advertising feature New irrigation business making a splash ROB IKIN: Our team of pivot installers and service technicians are probably the most experienced crew in the state.'' Picture: CHRIS KIDD IT'S been a tough couple of seasons for many irrigating and cropping farmers in Tasmania, with unseasonably wet weather at planting and unwanted heavy rain at harvest time hammering yields and profits. It has also been tough work for new irrigation company Van Diemen's Land Irrigation. The company was started in 2010 by Rob Ikin in partnership with a local farmer and agricultural investor with the aim of offering Tasmanian farmers top quality imported and locally manu- factured irrigation equipment and ma- chinery as competitively priced as possible without compromising quality and service. ''It's been hard going starting an irrigation business from scratch with new brands of irrigation equipment that are new and not established in Tasmania, not to mention the wettest two irrigation seasons in the last 20 years, but we are starting to see the results of hard work,'' Mr Ikin said. A lot of work has gone into sourcing the best irrigation equipment he could find overseas to import into Tasmania. ''Our centre pivot Pierce is manufac- tured in the USA at Eugene in Oregon state,'' he said. ''Pierce make great pivots , micro pivots and linears and are one of oldest manufacturers of irrigation equipment in the US, celebrating more than 75 years. ''We now have Pierce centre pivots , linears and micro pivots up and running in the North-West, Tamar, northern and southern Midlands and the Derwent Valley. ''I have worked really hard to make sure that the equipment and projects we have undertaken in our first couple of years are working well and that my customers are completely happy with the machinery and our service. ''The equipment we import, sell and service is top quality and we are able to be very competitive. Lets face it, most irrigation machinery available today in Australia is imported. ''We freight it direct into Tassie. I Can get a container from Oregon in the USA or out of Italy cheaper than I can get a container to Tasmania from Brisbane. ''We also try to keep our warehous- ing and infrastructure costs low as possible. This helps us pass more savings onto the customer ''This does not mean we can't give you the service and the backup you need to have with irrigation. Our team of pivot installers and service tech- nicians are probably the most experi- enced crew in the state, having put up between them hundreds of pivots in the last 15 years and are experienced in installing and servicing any brand of irrigation equipment. We can handle any installation project statewide. ''I have been employed in the Tas- manian irrigation and machinery in- dustry since 1987 and a lot of changes have taken place over those years; I have learnt over those years working for different irrigation companies. ''It doesn't matter how good your equipment is, if you lack integrity, have poor backup and after sales service then that company's reputation and business in Tasmania will suffer. ''Bad new travels quicker then good news in this sector so service and backup are King. I knew that when I started this business that the most important thing I need to have is to backup what you sell and we do just that! ''It has taken me a couple of years to get established and get our irrigation equipment in the field but I feel completely confident in our machinery and our ability and capacity to handle any project large or small. We are very competitive and look after our cus- tomers. Being flexible and innovative is important and we can do both. ''I do have an office at our irrigation shed in the Swanston Park industrial estate at St Leonards, were just around the corner from the Launceston sale yards at Killafaddy but mostly I am on the road and working out of my vehicle. You can be sure with me that the bloke your talking to knows what he's doing with 20-plus years experi- ence in practical irrigation and pump- ing system design and sales. ''I have always looked after my clients to the best of my ability and I come up with our best price first up, unlike some other irrigation salesmen and companies. I pride myself in offering honest straight talking irri- gation advice and being easily contac- table. I don't go missing in action and I will answer my phone after 5 o'clock and on weekends. ''I look forward to helping my clients, previous customers old and new with their next irrigation or pumping equip- ment project .''
