TAS Country : February 2nd 2012
8 Tasmanian Country Friday, February 3, 2012 Come and see how farms used to be TIME WARP: Oatlands will see a battle between modern horsepower and traditional bullock power. ROGER HANSON BRIAN FISH: One of Tasmania's last working bullockies. Picture: ROSS MARSDEN MODERN advances in farm machinery have made operation more efficient, but some of the romance is missing. The Working Bullock Festival at Oatlands on Saturday, February 11, brings alive what was ''Then and Now''. The festival, from 10am to 4pm, celebrates the way things used to be done compared with today's modern machinery. Festival committeeman Andrew Fish said it would be a packed event. ''Most of the equipment is in working condition, so it won't be static displays -- people will see it in oper- ation,'' Mr Fish said. All proceeds from the festival this year will go to support the Midlands Multi-Purpose Health Centre. At the last festival in 2009, the event raised $10,000 for the palliative care centre and, with the line-up this year, organ- isers are looking at raising more funds. Crowd favourite, the bulldozer parade, will fea- ture a line-up of Caterpillar dozers from D2 to the latest D7. ''We will have vintage machines from the 1960s to the latest,'' Mr Fish said. Machines will entertain the crowd by lining up to push dirt in a test of strength. ''It is quite a spectacular sight seeing the combin- ation of machines at work,'' Mr Fish said. His father, Brian, will give a demonstration of his working bullock team. ''The bullock team will be working a plough, pas- ture harrows and dray,'' Mr Fish said. ''Also, the bullocks will load logs on to a log wagon.'' Vintage tractors and cars will be on display. A vintage hand-operated seed drill, which is like a modified wheelbarrow, would put oats into the ground. ''That will be compared with sowing seeds behind a 200hp tractor,'' Mr Fish said. Producers in the district will have entries in the fat lamb competition. There will be a junior and senior judged section. Yard sheepdogs will also be put to the test. Michelle Pears, of the innovative children's show Makebelieve, is creating a special Bullock Festival show, Admission is adults $10, teenagers $5 and children under 10 free.
