ANOTHER interesting week with some parts of the state getting a decent rain and others very little. I have heard of falls around 20mm to 25mm in some places and in some cases that will be a nuis- ance rather than a benefit but will certainly help the summer fodder crops. Most livestock markets took a sideways track dur- ing the week with a gener- ally slightly weaker beef market -- in particular, export bullocks and cows. Best beef cows here made 125c to 140c/kg while in Victoria they were only a few cents better. This is still good money for old cast for age cows and at Killafaddy the heavy cows realised $720 to $815/head while restockers paid $588 to $691 for medium weights. Bullock prices were also a little cheaper on average with heavy pens making 165c to 175c/kg in local saleyards while at Paken- ham, the heavy bullocks sold for 162c to 188c/kg. Over the hooks prices is Tasmania have dropped around 10c/kg over the past couple of weeks but in the case of MSA-graded yearlings we are still well in front of interstate quotes. The vast majority of our yearlings killed here are MSA graded; interstate they are less than half. Export cattle prices have had to cope with an in- crease of about 5 per cent in the value of the Aust- ralian dollar over the past month which would be hurting all exporters trad- ing in US dollars. Australian beef ship- ments for the first 20 days of January barely ex- ceeded 26,000 tonnes which isonpacetobeoneofthe lowest export months in recent history. MLA reports that the rapid finish to the 2011 beef export year may also be a factor contributing to the slow start to 2012 and accentuated by the lack of available beef in January, with many processors still operating at reduced ca- pacity. On a different subject, and it is probably of no great surprise that Aust- ralian lamb exports to South East Asia and Greater China reached a new record in 2011, in- creasing 15 per cent to 38,482 tonnes. Driving the growth in exports to the region were record ship- ments to China, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Indon- esia and Thailand. Exports to China (21,234 tonnes) and Malaysia (5359 tonnes) increased 35 per cent and 20 per cent re- spectively. Assisting the increase in shipments to China throughout 2011 was the Chinese Government's increased scrutiny of food safety, which supported de- mand for imported sheep meat.
