TAS Country : March 8th 2012
Friday, March 9, 2012 Tasmanian Country 31 Cameras to monitor abattoirs ONE Indonesian cattle im- porter is installing its own video cameras in every abattoir it supplies. Lampung-based Great Giant Livestock --- the im- porter at the centre of last week's animal welfare scandal in Indonesian abattoirs --- says constant monitoring will help to ensure good animal wel- fare outcomes and will allow the company to ver- ify undercover footage shot in its facilities. The company is one of the biggest importers and lot feeders of Australian cattle in Indonesia and is accredited under Aust- ralia's Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System. Great Giant Livestock is using the footage as an example of what not to do in an attempt to improve education on animal wel- fare in the processing fa- cilities it supplies.
