Picture: KAROLIN MacGREGOR CATTLE prices have shown some improvement over the past week with export cattle being keenly sought after. Although only small numbers of cows are com- ing into the local saleyards, heavy beef cows are selling at high levels and at Bridg- ewater where there were 50 cows, the heavy pens made 149c to 165c/kg and a truck of 14 cows topped at $1391/head. At Killafaddy, the few heavy cows made 154c to 160c/kg and at Quoiba there were 60 cows and the best made 151c to 162c/kg liveweight. Over the next few weeks we will see more cows come to the market as the calves are weaned and it will be interesting to see if this affects the high prices. The good news is that most of the cow beef is exported to the United States and that market is holding up very well and certainly Tasmanian over- the-hooks prices are good with most heavy cows sit- ting around 300c/kg car- case weight. At Pakenham on Tuesday there were 279 cows and most were quot- ed 5c to 6c/kg dearer with better quality 3,4 and 5 score cows selling between 144c and 166c/kg with some extra fat 5 score cows making 140c to 152c/kg. Large framed 2 and 3 score dairy cows made 146c to 155c/kg while very lean cows made 125c to 145c/kg. The carcase weight average price was estimated at 306c/kg. Bullocks are also selling well and at Killafaddy on Tuesday heavy bullocks weighing over 600kg made 186c to 194c/kg with most working out between $1150 and $1380/head. Grown steers (500 to 600kg) sold for 185c to 196c/kg and at Quoiba these steers topped at 209c/kg liveweight. At Pakenham there were 600 grown steers and bullocks with most selling to a slightly cheaper mar- ket. Prime bullocks made 183c to 193c/kg while heavy manufacturing types made 160c to 185c/kg, liveweight. Trade cattle prices, both locally and in Victoria, were higher this week with most averaging 8c to 10c/kg higher. At Killafaddy we saw restockers very keen on well-bred steers and paid 190c to 213c/kg for both vealers and yearlings and were also strong on heifers paying 189c to 203c/kg which obviously put a strong floor in the trade cattle market. Most vealers made 199c to 224c/kg while the trade paid 190c to 205c/kg for yearling steers and 180c to 208c/kg for heifers. At Quoiba it was a simi- lar story with vealers top- ping at 229c/kg liveweight. Last week Elders held its first weaner calf sale of the season at Powranna and put together an excellent line-up of 2430 well bred calves. They did an excellent job and all steer calves in the first three rows were weighed with weights dis- played and generally speaking were penned in order of weight. The market was again strong compared with the week before with best steers making $780 to $940, medium weights $670 to $895 and lighter $590 to $725/head. The best heifers sold for $650 to $765, medium weights $590 to $765, light $480 to $615 and a few very small $445 to $485/head. Tasmanian restockers and backgrounders were the vast majority with only a few getting a boat trip across the strait.
