TAS Country : April 5th 2012
18 Tasmanian Country Friday, April 6, 2012 Advertising Feature Hereford and Poll Hereford Sales Spoilt for choice with quality herds QUAMBY Plains and Che- ster Poll Hereford studs welcome all cattle breeders to their 28th annual bull sale. This year's group of bulls are of a high quality with sound structure, com- bined with medium to low birth weights, as well as showing excellent milk, growth and carcase EBVs. The draft of 44 bulls is chosen from progeny of over 300 cows in both studs. This supplies strong selection criteria on all bulls. Both studs AI 150 cows using the best bulls available, chosen for their selection traits. These traits are selected to improve EBVs for com- mercial cattle producers for the best return per hectare in their cattle oper- ation. Fertility selection is a high priority to both studs, as it is most influential in achieving high gross mar- gins in cattle enterprises. All bulls in the sale team have excellent EBVs for scrotal size with 75 per cent above breed average. All cows two years old and above must rear a calf. Structural soundness is a major emphasis of both studs' breeding programs. Strong emphasis is placed on temperament, fertility as well as ''do-ability'' un- der any conditions. Quiet cattle put on weight faster and achieve higher percentages for MSA-graded cattle. Milk is also important as well as strong carcase EBVs, with emphasis on positive fat to increase fer- tility in the cowherd and carcase performance. Below average breed birth weights are strongly selected for ease of man- agement. Sixty per cent of this year's sale bulls are below the Australian Here- ford breed average for birth weight. Both studs also run a commercial cattle oper- ation, which is used as a guide for selection of stud sires. Chester Poll Here- fords sell steers and sur- plus heifers to Woolworths with great success and high acceptance percent- ages. Quamby Plains sell their steers and surplus heifer portion at Quoiba and, every year, buyers come back to buy the cattle. All bulls are veterinary checked for fertility and soundness. They are tested negative to BVDV Pestivi- rus and both vaccinated forBVDVand7in1. This year there are sons of Allendale Washington C77, Koanui Rocket 0219 and Wirruna Benalla, as well as South Bukalong Shannon 40 and Chester Fellis C22. BRUCE and KATRINA ARCHER An even line of GUILFORD Poll Here- fords will conduct its 38th annual bull sale on May 1, starting at 1.30pm. The offering covers 38 performance-recorded bulls. All bulls have been reserved for sale at our property, and we believe they may represent our best efforts to date. Bulls are available to suit all breeding programs. The bulls are a very even line. There is depth of quality and perform- ance running right through the catalogue, combined with high per- formance EBVs to match the bulls. As well as being scanned and performance recorded with the Poll Hereford group breed plan, all have serving ability and have been se- men tested, giving buyers confidence to purchase. The bulls also have been tested negative PI for BVDV and vaccinated with Pestigard. Bulls on offer include the first sons of Allendale Washington C77, which was purchased in partner- ship with Quamby Plains & Chester at Dubbo in 2009 for $30,000. He has produced an excellent line of attractive, easy-doing bulls with growth and muscle and a beautiful line of heifers that should make top cows. Another sire is Debarry Eden, which was bought privately in 2005 for $25,000. Eden is siring dark-coated calves with extra length. His EBVs are outstanding, being low for birth weight, high growth and high milk at +25. To date, Eden has been used in 34 studs. Guilford Zeus Z1 was Junior and Grand Cham- pion Poll Hereford Bull and Junior Interbreed Champion Bull at Royal Hobart in 2005. He is siring calves with out- standing growth, length, thickness and muscle. A catalogue is available at www.guilford.com.au.
