TAS Country : April 19th 2012
Friday, April 20, 2012 Tasmanian Country 17 The Stock Report Mixed fortunes at Killafaddy sale THERE was another small total yarding of 155 trade and export cattle at Kil- lafaddy on Tuesday with about 60 per cent being export types. The quality of trade cat- tle was very mixed with few vealers and most were yearling heifers. The vealers sold for 197c to 217c/kg while most year- ling heifers met a similar market, selling from 185c to 211c/kg. Restockers bought most of the yearling steers for 180c to 199c/kg, or $685 to $916/head. There were 35 grown steers and bullocks and these met an easier market with the steers (500kg to 600kg) making 169c to 185c/kg and heavy bull- ocks (over 600kg) 168c to 175c/kg, liveweight. There were 58 cows yarded and most were heavy beef types and these averaged 13c/kg cheaper with most making 125c to 141c/kg while restockers paid 127c to 137c/kg for suitable types. THERE was a similar number of 980 lambs pen- ned and from the outset competition was weaker and most sales of trade and heavy lambs were $15 to $20/head cheaper than last sale. The only positive out of the sale was the strong restocker support from the North West Coast finishers who paid $82 to $88/head for well-bred shorn lambs and $70 to $80 for smaller lambs. Trade lambs sold from $84 to $96, heavy $90 to $104 and extra heavy $100 to $108/head. There was a larger pen- ning of about 750 mutton with most being heavy crossbred ewes. These were very hard to sell, fetching between $42 to $55/head while neater me- dium weights made $53 to $67 and lighter types $49 to $58/head. Restockers paid $41 to $69 a head for crossbred and Merino ewes. RICHARD BAILEY Try out smartphone farming application JAMES McSHANE: Here is a product that is designed by farmers for farmers.'' KAROLIN MacGREGOR TWO Tasmanian software developers have put out a call for farmers to road-test their new smartphone farm management appli- cation. Farmer James McShane and spatial analyst Tim Bendall have developed a new application that al- lows farmers to record farm activities, livestock records and cropping in- formation on their mobile phones. Once recorded, the data can then be easily recalled on the device in the form of reports and charts if need- ed.The application, called Farmware, can be used on most smartphones as well as computers, and synchronises the data be- tween the devices using a cloud server. The idea for Farmware first came about when Mr McShane was looking for an affordable software to meet all his farm manage- ment needs. Mr McShane said he wanted one program that could do everything rather than juggling between dif- ferent products and spreadsheets. ''Finally here is a prod- uct that is designed by farmers for farmers,'' he said. Mr Bendall, who is the head programmer of Farm- ware, said the product was now at the stage where it needed to be tested by farmers, and lots of them. ''We've got a versatile product here that we now want to test on a diverse set of farmers,'' he said. Mr McShane, who oper- ates a mixed farming en- terprise in the southern Midlands, said it was time to put the application to the test. ''Preliminary testing has been under way for some months, but now we're looking at refining and tailoring the product by getting feedback from a large number of users,'' he said. Any farmers who volun- teer to test the application will receive a two-year sub- scription once the product is commercially launched later this year. Anyone interested in be- ing involved with the test- ing can contact Farmware on Facebook, Twitter or by emailing james@farm- ware.net.
