Picture: ROSS MARSDEN IT started in 1983 as a way of funding Rural Youth in Tasmania after the government of the day withdrew finan- cial support of the organisation. Today, Agfest is a shining example of how hard work from a band of dedicated volunteers can overcome the odds to run what has grown to be one of the leading agricultural events in the country --- an event which adds about $25 million to the Tasmanian economy. The first Agfest Field Day at the Symmons Plains race track was an instant hit with the rural community as well as those living in the city. Over two days 9000 people flocked to see the exhibits and displays. Last year, about 60,000 patrons came through the gates, with more than 600 exhibitors from Tasmania and interstate taking part. And Agfest continues to grow. This year, the event, from May 3-5, and headed by Agfest chairman Kylie Burns and her organising committee, celebrates 30 years of bridging the gap between the country and the city.
