TAS Country : April 26th 2012
Friday, April 27, 2012 Tasmanian Country 11 Hellyers' class in a glass GROWING: Hellyers Road Distillery general manager and whisky maker Mark Littler will return to Agfest this year. Picture: CHRIS KIDD HELEN KEMPTON WHISKY, vodka and liqueur pro- ducer Hellyers Road Distillery has notched up such growth in its 13 years of business it has hired a national sales manager. The Burnie-based business pro- duced its first spirit in January 1999 and opened up its visitor centre and restaurant in 2006. The distillery will be back at Agfest this year after a most successful inaugural appearance last year. ''Last year was our first Agfest experience and the icing on the cake was winning the Unique Fine Foods exhibit award,'' general manager and whisky maker Mark Littler said. ''Agfest provides great exposure for a business. We are a small company and Agfest gives us a chance to get together and connect with customers.'' Customers can sample the product before they buy and this year Hel- lyers Road Distillery will have a selection of single malts to try including its original, petered and pinot gris varieties. Its triple-distilled vodka and single malt whisky cream liqueur will also be available. If sampling gets your tastebuds thirsting for more, why not take a drive up to Burnie and take part in a walking tour through the distillery in Old Surrey Rd. The guided tour through the work- ing distillery focuses on ingredients and processes that deliver what the company says is one of the world's finest boutique single malt whiskies. Visitors can also gain an insight into the man who inspired the brand -- Henry Hellyer. In 1825, Henry Hellyer, the then chief surveyor of the Van Dieman's Land Company, was one of the first European explorers to set foot in the rugged interior of the North West.
