TAS Country : April 26th 2012
30 Tasmanian Country Friday, April 27, 2012 Best start in MENTOR: Boarding house staff offer more than just academic support. The Hutchins School has all it takes to give your son a launch pad to his future THE Hutchins School is one of Australia's oldest schools, with a reputation for excellence in educating boys and an outstand- ing academic record. Hutchins is a founder mem- ber of the International Co- alition of Boys' Schools and the headmaster is a member of the Association of Heads of Inde- pendent Schools of Australia. The main campus is located 5km from Hobart city centre with expansive grounds over- looking the picturesque River Derwent. The school has modern class- rooms, state-of-the-art science and computer laboratories, three libraries, a performing arts centre, a chapel and newly redeveloped boarding house. Extensive sporting facilities include one turf cricket wicket, four turf cricket nets, three playing fields, a gymnasium, one fully equipped rowing train- ing facility and six tennis courts. The school's sail training boat, Aurora, is used for out- door programs on the river which also forms the backdrop for rowing events. The off-campus Year 9 program ''The Power of 9'' is based at nearby Marieville Es- planade. Hutchins also offers a range of vocational programs including cooking, construction and hospitality. Vocational students have been recognised with industry awards at both state and national levels. The Power of 9 program has become nationally recognised for the development of students through a series of outdoor education, academic, practical and cultural ''challenges''. Hutchins' co-curricular program offers a vast array of sports ranging from the tra- ditional such as rowing, cricket and football, through to newer and growing sports. The performing arts program offers training in a range of drama styles, with The Hutchins School boasting the state's only all-male student dance troupe. The school's boarding facility, Burbury House, has undergone a full refit and refurbishment to world-class standard. Students enjoy spacious, at- tractively furnished rooms and bathrooms and welcoming le- isure areas, including a theatre room and games room, kitchen- ette and music rooms. Boarders also have access to the school's sporting facilities, a gym and weights room. The new dining area and kitchen, which allow boys to enjoy their meals and socialise, also pro- vide a venue for welcoming members of the boarding and wider school community. Boarders also enjoy a wide range of weekend activities and are provided with many oppor- tunities to enjoy Tasmania's spectacular scenery and water- ways by taking part in outdoor pursuits such as bushwalking and sailing. Sports such as indoor cricket, hockey, soccer, touch football and basketball are also on offer, as well as cultural activities such as gallery visits and an art group. Boarders' meals are often the envy of day students, with our chef catering for all dietary 2012 Tasweld AGFEST Specials!
