TAS Country : June 14th 2012
12 Tasmanian Country Friday, June 15, 2012 News RICH TOIL: Colin Houston and Brad Grattidge. Pictures: ROGER LOVELL ROGER HANSON Perfect patc SIXTH-generation farmer Brad Grat- tidge and vegetable grower Colin Hou- ston have land with quality soil, and all they need is water to complete the picture. The experienced farmers believe the South East Irrigation Scheme will deliver the surety of water which will, in turn, create the opportunities to make their enterprises a success. The Minister for Primary Industry and Water, Bryan Green, recently announced the business case for the South East Irrigation Scheme (SEIS) has been approved. However, the project will be costly. Tasmanian Irrigation has to achieve a water sales threshold, firm quotes within budget and final regulatory permits and approvals to get the Government's $26 million contribution in the public-private partnership. The balance of the $14 million will come from private water sales. The initial offer to farmers is $2700 per megalitre. Water to be offered is 5000ML. Subject to all approvals going through, the estimated start of con- struction is next February. Water will be sourced from the River Derwent at Bryn Estyn with 50km of supply pipeline from Granton to Craigbourne, including a new River Derwent cross- ing of 45km of distribution pipeline and up to five pump stations. The irrigable area of SEIS will be 25,000ha. Mr Grattidge, who has three farms in the Forcett area, and is chairman of the Sorell Irrigation Group, said it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. From their 485ha property, Rayburn, Mr Grattidge's family has, over the generations, witnessed huge changes in farming. ''I don't believe people understand the full value of the food requirements expected in the next 50 years, and with a workforce at our doorstep in the south-east, we are in a great position to build for the future,'' Mr Grattidge said. He is growing 42ha of poppies, along with vegetables, cabbage seed, cereal wheat, oats and triticiale. He also runs 130 Angus cows and a 1000 sheep. ''It will be sad for farmers to miss the opportunities that will arise for not having the foresight to purchase water and use the government subsidies. ''The surety of water will open up the door to a range of horticultural options *2.9% comparison rate available to approved personal applicants & a 2.9% annual percentage rate is available to approved Bronze Fleet & Primary Producer applicants of Toyota Finance for the financing of Yaris hatch range, Yaris YRS sedan, Corolla Ascent, Corolla Ascent Sport, RAV4 CV 4CYL and 2011 build new generation Camry Atara and Altise grades only.
