TAS Country : June 14th 2012
Friday, June 15, 2012 Tasmanian Country 13 News EXCITING FUTURE: Above, Brad Grattidge's farmhouse. Below, Brad Grattidge and Colin Houston and the area's rich soil. ch just needs water for farmers,'' he said. The rich vein of volcanic basalt soil that runs through the area is unique in southern Tasmania. ''Without water it is just nothing, the soil is bit of a secret,'' he said. ''This is the driest part of Tasmania, but once you add water it is a very productive farm area to grow crops for a niche market. ''We have a unique micro climate, not severe heat and limited frosts.'' Mr Houston, who sold his interest in the well-known Houstons farm four years ago, now works with son Ben, growing a variety of lettuce and cauli- flower in the neighbouring property. ''This area has an average rainfall of 500ml a year, and the soil is ideally suited to growing lettuce and salad products because disease isn't as preva- lent because of the low humidity. However, with the surety of water via the irrigation scheme so many more options will open up,'' Mr Houston said. ''With the extreme weather patterns interstate, a lot of interstate companies have an eye on Tasmania. ''There are a lot of opportunities to serve the local market by getting into niche products with high-value crops.'' He said with water there are so many more products that could be grown, such as stone fruits, grapes, seed crops, flowers, cherries and agri tourism. ''Just look at the cool-climate wine, how this industry has been developed in Tasmania. Water is the vital com- ponent and if this scheme goes ahead it will provide that. ''To keep good, qualified people in the state we need enterprise.'' Ben Houston, who has worked inter- state, said this little patch of Tasmania was unbelievable. ''This is the best place I know for growing vegetables, yet it is relatively untapped. The Derwent River water is excellent and reliable,'' Ben said. ''We don't have to do too much to the land, because it is all here, excellent soil, we just need to add water.''
