Last year saw a continuation of uncertain market conditions with Europe remaining in the headlines all year for all of the wrong reasons before the United States stole the limelight in the last few months with its future tax and spending policies. In Australia we saw concerns over the future of the mining investment boom which prompted volatility in commodity prices. We also saw the Reserve Bank of Australia ease monetary policy by a total of 125 basis points to a GFC low official cash rate of 3 per cent. So what are we in for in 2013? This is a federal election year and we have a government that was insistent on delivering a surplus to give them the greatest chance of being re-elected. We can safely assume that we will have low interest rates, a high Australian dollar and an increase in residential property prices. The ANZ bank has forecast that Australian cash rates will fall to 2 per cent. This will further reduce term deposit rates and make investing in alternative asset classes necessary. Term deposit rates are predicted to start around the mid 2 per cent level and would be returning after tax less than inflation. Under a 2 per cent cash rate borrowing costs will come down, which would be very positive for residential property markets, making it cheaper to buy than rent. We are seeing signs of stabilisation coming through China. As this con- tinues, faith will return to the Aust- ralian equity market. It will be a much better year in 2013 with still much work to be done globally. Domestically we will continue to live in a world of low interest rates where looking for alternatives will be necessary, and both the residential property and our share market will benefit enormously from this.
