News Cherries ripe for China ROGER HANSON ALMOST half the daily production of one of Tas- mania's biggest cherry growers is being exported daily to China. Twenty tonnes of quality cherries are being ex- ported each day to Beijing and Shanghai from Reid Fruits Packing sheds at Huonville. After months of finalis- ing protocols the first ship- ment of Tasmanian cher- ries left in 2kg and 5kg boxes and will be on Bei- jing supermarket shelves by lunchtime today. ''Every day to the end of the season we will be ship- ping 10 tonnes of quality cherries to each city,'' Reid Fruits managing director Tim Reid said. ''This is a big outcome for the Australian cherry industry. We have been working on this project for more than a decade. It will be a whole new market for the industry leading to more jobs.'' The cherries are ripe for gift-giving for the Chinese New Year on February 10. Mr Reid said Tasmania's disease-free status satisfied stringent quarantine re- quirements. Fruit Growers Tas- mania business develop- ment manager Lucy Gregg said the Chinese market presents huge opportun- ities for Tasmanian growers. ''This is a fantastic op- portunity for Tasmanian cherry growers and ex- porters,'' Ms Gregg said. Currently 10 Tasmanian growers have indicated they may send cherries to China for this season, but it is expected more than 50 growers may consider sending fruit from Tas- mania next season. Asia ship link pushed MAT SMITH and ROGER HANSON TASMANIAN farmers are supporting the push to resecure a direct shipping route to Asia. The Tasmanian Far- mers and Graziers Associ- ation backs the move to explore the option after a Chinese shipping giant had showed interest. ''Any additional option is a good thing for our exporters,'' TFGA chief executive Jan Davis said. The Tasmanian Ex- porters Group, formerly the Bell Bay Industry Group, has been working closely with at least one international shipping company to reinstate a shipping link between Bell Bay and China via a stop- off at a Hong Kong hub. The proposal would need transitional govern- ment funding of about $10 million per year for the next three years. Tasmanian Exporters Group chairman Bob Goz- zi said he had been in talks with Swire Shipping. Swire Australia general manager Steve Clark con- firmed the company had been looking at the Tas- manian market. Tasmanian Infrastruc- ture Minister David O'Byrne welcomed the pro- posal but said it would be scrutinised by the state's freight logistics coordi- nation team.
